LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Between 450 and 500 students kicked the school year off in a brand new building on Wednesday at Brenda Cowan Elementary School in Lexington.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was just held on Monday, but students and teachers are eager to get to work.

Principal Joshua Williams said everything has been running smoothly on this first day and everyone has been working around the clock to get the school ready.

"We spent the whole morning just going over routines and procedures with our students and just working to build relationships. And so, it's just been a wonderful experience. I'm so grateful to have this opportunity, and the staff, it's just so exciting and the community support is so amazing," said Williams.

Principal Williams said the school is about 80 percent complete, but also said the whole project should be finished soon.
