LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Easter is typically a busy season for Kathy Schenck, the owner of Bitty Bows Boutiques. But this year, her purpose transcends profits.

“We’re at war right now,” Schenck said of the battle against the Coronavirus. “Our front line is out there doing all the dirty work for us. And we’re just being told to stay home and watch ‘Tiger King.’”

Schenck is a member of a Kentucky Face Mask Warriors, a Facebook group that has more than 400 members. It is a part of a 50 state network that was established in an effort to connect sewists with medical facilities that desperately need face masks and other personal protective equipment.

“Elastic has run out,” Schenck said. “It’s really hard to find. And I have it.”

Schenck told LEX18 she has shipped out or made available more than 2,100 elastic bands, which can secure the mask around a healthcare worker’s face.
