BEREA, Ky. (LEX 18) — As COVID-19 continues to spread across the country, we hear more stories about how it's impacting families across the Bluegrass.

A popular sportswriter and editor in Berea says three of his family members tested positive for COVID-19 during the month of August, including his 68-year-old mother who is currently being treated in the ICU of Berea Hospital.

Keith Taylor who works as a UK beat writer and publisher for Berea citizen says his family has taken all the proper precautions since his mother is a diabetic and in the higher risk category.

"Regardless of all the precautions, sometimes it can happen," Taylor said.

Taylor's first family member that tested positive was his stepfather, Kenneth Reed, then his step-grandmother tested positive, who is 95 years old. Luckily, they are both recovering well at home, but his mother is being hospitalized.

"When you are a journalist, especially when you see the charts online and press conferences, you always look at numbers," Taylor said. "But when that number becomes a family member, it opens your eyes a little bit more on how real COVID-19 is. It has become more real the last few days. These people aren't just numbers, they are human beings."

Another struggle is not being able to see his mother in person, but he says his entire family has called her constantly and is optimistic over her recovery.
