LEXINGTON, KY (LEX 18) — Step by Step works with over 200 young, single moms ages 12-24, in the Lexington community.

Since businesses, schools and daycare centers have shut down, the organization has adjusted the way they help the young moms.

"Many of them, are of course are home with their children. There's no childcare, there's no school and they're single parents. So they are the ones who are going to work to make money for their homes and provide for their lives and they are unable to do that now," Executive Director, Tanya Torp, said.

Tanya Torp says that when these women do make it to the store, essentials like diapers, baby wipes and toilet paper aren't there. "So we are collecting those things here, and hand delivering them to our moms, along with activity packs for their children."

In addition to collecting the items, the organization has started an emergency fund, to help with short term bills.

"All of those moms that we have, they're out of work right now. Their rent is due on the first. So how to help them right now, it might exceed $20,000," Torp said.

So, the organization is asking for your help. "We are accepting toilet paper, laundry detergent, feminine products, diapers, wipes, and also children's activities," Program Director, Alicia Sims said.
