LOUISVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18/WAVE) — The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has released the identity of the gunman who was shot to death by police outside of a Kroger in Louisville on Thursday.

WAVE reported that Kathy Hamilton, the deputy coroner, released a statement on the gunman on Saturday afternoon.

The gunman was identified as Shelby Gazaway, 32, and died from a gunshot wound during the shootout with police.

On Friday, police released the body camera video of the shootout to the public. The video shows two Louisville Metro Police Department officers confront the suspect, who was armed and coming out of Kroger.

Gazaway had walked out of the Kroger and started shooting at the responding officers. That is when officers returned gunfire and hit Gazaway, causing his death.

According to WAVE, LMPD was called to the incident on Thursday around 6 p.m. Police had received reports of shots being fired inside of the Kroger.

Gazaway had been caught in a confrontation with another shopper and witnesses told WAVE that the other man had pulled out a knife before Gazaway pulled out a gun and opened fire in Kroger.
