SCOTT COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) – Ten years after a car crash that almost killed them, Laura and Doug McDonald stopped by to say thanks to the first responders that were there that day.

On August 23, 2008, Doug and Laura McDonald were airlifted to UK with life-threatening injuries. They were in a head-on crash that killed the other driver and nearly killed them.

Fire Marshal Tim Thompson was at the scene of August 23, 2008.

“To be quite honest, even if they had made it, I didn’t think they’d be in the position they are now,” said Thompson.

That is why on Thursday, the couple came by to say thanks to all of the Georgetown’s First Responders that helped keep them alive.

Laura still had the rods and pins that were needed to put her broken body back together and as she was recovering from those surgeries, Doug was lying in a coma for a month with severe brain trauma. He took two months to relearn how to walk and talk.

“I’m sure she was very, very upset, but she was in a lot of pain as well. But survival was the number 1 priority,” said Doug.

Ten years later, they have three new priorities, their children. Their youngest child celebrates his birthday on the “anniversary” date of the collision.

“It is perfect symmetry for us. 10 years in, and celebrating his first birthday,” said Laura.
