LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– Blue Grass Airport has been expanding in recent years, and Thursday morning they will continue that growth.

Airport officials are expected to hold a ground breaking ceremony for their new aircraft rescue and firefighting facility.

The airport currently offers four major airlines that each provide a number of non-stop and connecting flights to hundreds of destinations.

It serves more than 1.3 million passengers a year.

Not many details have been released on the new airport rescue and firefighting facilities, but airport leaders say this project will enhance the safety for all of their passengers and crews.

The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. and Congressman Andy Barr is expected to attend.

If you’re flying out of the airport Thursday morning, don’t worry, the ceremony is being held away from the main terminal, so it shouldn’t affect your commute at all.
