LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE 3)– A Louisville mother is speaking out after her son was hit and killed while riding his bicycle.

23-year-old Austin Melvin was hit and killed Tuesday night on Preston Highway.

Family members say he was on his way to a nearby gas station to grab a drink.

Melvin was crossing the highway on his bike when he was hit by a rental van, and the driver did not stop.

Officials say Melvin flew off his bike onto the other side of the road, where he was hit by another car.

His mother has a message for the unknown driver.

“Turn yourself in please. You took the most precious thing from me, something that I thought I would never have. Just do the right thing.”

So far, police have not released any other details about the case.
