LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Evacuations along the East Coast continued Wednesday afternoon, as Hurricane Florence barrels toward the Carolinas and Virginia.

Some of the most vulnerable are coming to Lexington, including those at the Tanbark Health Care Center, where staff have taken in dozens of patients from a sister facility in Norfolk, Virginia.

Two charter buses carried 61 residents from the facility Wednesday morning to Kentucky, where they are now safe from the storm. They are expected to be here at least until Saturday.

The administrator told LEX 18 this is a first for her, but they were prepared and had the space to accommodate more residents.

The incoming patients had their vitals taken; extra wheelchairs, beds, and mattresses were brought in; and activity and social services have been expanded.

Meanwhile, the facility in Norfolk has been boarded up and once the storm passes, the company will assess the damage.
