MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (LEX 18)– Officials say that human remains found in Tennessee four years ago are those of a Middlesboro woman who went missing from her home almost 10 years ago.

Katherine Sarah Heck was last seen Feb. 1, 2009 around 10 a.m. on 43rd Street in Middlesboro.

A large scale search turned up clothing items, but Heck was never found.

She was entered into the National Missing Persons database and over the years, several tips arose with none panning out until a body was found near the shoreline of Fern Lake in Claiborne County, Tenn. in September 2014.

In early 2017, items were sent off for DNA profiling, according to the Knox County Regional Forensics Center Director John Lott.

Lott said that in early September 2018, there was a positive identification on the items was returned as Katherine Sarah Heck.

There is no word on the cause of her death.
