LINCOLN COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – A gas leak in downtown Stanford caused businesses and homes to evacuate Tuesday.

Stanford Police confirm the gas leak was reported on Main Street.  A private construction crew was relocating underground electricity under Somerset Street and hit a 4-inch main gas line around noon.

All of downtown and Anderson Heights were evacuated. Approximately, 200 people and 20 businesses along the south side of Main Street were shut down including city hall.

The gas lines were old with no valve shut off mechanisms, so it had to be welded shut.

After over six hours, the leak was over and the evacuations were lifted.
