LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE 3) — Police say the death of a Louisville toddler was caused by a tragic accident when the mother hit the child in the driveway.

The 18-month-old was hit outside of her home around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to WAVE 3.

They report that the Louisville Metro Police Department launched an investigation into the toddler’s death.

Their initial investigation revealed that the child’s mother left the 18-month-old and a three-year-old sibling in their home when she went out to the driveway to move a car.She told police that as she was backing up, she heard a scream.

She jumped out of the car to find her daughter had left the house and wandered into the path of the vehicle, WAVE 3 reports.

CPR was started at the scene and emergency crews closed streets to rush the child to Norton Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
