MOREHEAD, Ky (LEX 18)– The Morehead State University softball team is hosting a Home Run Derby in honor of the 9-year-old boy in Rowan County who was killed after being swept away in floodwaters.

Some of the money raised for the derby will be going to the local search and rescue team who searched for Bryce Combs for days.  The rest of the money will go to the Combs family to help them during this difficult time.

The softball coach tells LEX 18 that this is the least they can do to help a grieving community.

“One thing the athletic department, the university, and the community hold true to our heart is a slogan that we call, one town, one team, and I think this is just a great representation of how the university and community come together in all types of instances,” said softball coach Samatha Jones.

The event will happen at 5:30 p.m. today at the MSU softball field. Batters get 10 pitches.
