LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) – The University of Kentucky’s Black Student Union is organizing an event in honor of Te’Niya Jones, a student killed in a drowning accident while studying abroad in the middle east.
Jones had been studying abroad in Jordan. She went swimming with friends during a side trip in Tel Aviv, Israel and was caught in a riptide. Despite a desperate search, her body was found on shore hours after she went missing.
Jones was a biology major with a minor in Islamic studies.
The vigil will be held outside of the Gatton Student Center Thursday beginning at 7 p.m.
There will be a candlelight memorial consisting of a prayer, words of encouragement, a dedicated song, words of remembrance from Jones’ loved ones, a poetry reading, and release of balloons in remembrance. Those in attendance are asked to wear green, as it was Jones’ favorite color.
