LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – A  Laurel County mother says she did nothing wrong after she ended up in jail for alleged deplorable conditions and for allegedly giving her children melatonin.

According to the sheriff, deputies were called to a home at the Corbin Manner Apartments after dispatch received a request for a welfare check.

Inside, deputies say the apartment was filthy and three children were inside. Officials also say the mother had given the children melatonin.

Jaime Zimmerman, 21, was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment. She spoke with LEX 18 from jail.

“I was told I was being arrested. And I said for what? And I was told because I give my kids melatonin,” she told LEX 18.

Melatonin is a supplement that is meant to help with insomnia. Zimmerman says her doctor told her it was fine to give her kids melatonin beginning at one-and-a-half.

She also denies that the house was “filthy.”

“The only one I can think that did this is my son, got the eggs out of the fridge, smashed them on the stove. While we were all sleeping,” she explained.

She was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center. Social services were notified.
