FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18/Herald Leader)– Attorney General Andy Beshear has appointed a special investigator to look into claims that Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes has abused her power.

According to a report in the Herald-Leader, the independent counsel will investigate whether she used voter data to learn the political leanings of new applicants and state board of elections staffers.

Given the nature of the allegations and to ensure a fair process for everyone, we appointed an independent counsel who is reviewing the letter and its contents,” said Deputy Attorney General J. Michael Brown.

The board’s Executive Director made the claims in August and the board backed Grimes in a meeting last month.
