PANAMA CITY, Ky. (LEX 18)– There were mandatory evacuations in many areas of Panama City Beach ahead of Hurricane Michael, but some people chose to stay.

April Young, who is originally from Beattyville, spoke with LEX 18 Wednesday morning, and she says she was afraid if she left she wouldn’t have been able to get back in for several days.

Overnight and throughout the morning, Hurricane Michael continued to strengthen.

“When I woke up this morning I saw it was now a category 4, it made me a little more nervous.”

Young and her boyfriend decided not to evacuate from their fifth floor Panama City Beach apartment head of landfall.

“I feel very, very safe. If I were on ground level, I would not be here at all.”

But they say they are locked in, and not planning to go anywhere until the coast is clear.

“We know the electric is going to be out for days, like, I’m totally prepared for that. I bought tons of food, water, we’re very prepared for the aftermath as well.”
