PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (LEX 18) –   An escape attempt in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center was thwarted by jail officials.

According to administrators at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, correctional officers noticed a hole that had been knocked through a cinderblock wall by inmates in an attempt to escape from custody.

The hole was approximately 18” by 12” and was located in a shower room. Two pieces of metal taken from a shelf in the cell were used to chip away at the blocks to create the hole that led to a plumbing access area.

Officers from the Paintsville Police Department were dispatched to the jail and are in charge of the investigation.
