(LEX 18)– The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released new Winter Weather predictions. For the Bluegrass, they’re saying we have a 50/50 chance for a harsh or mild winter.

LEX 18 Meteorologist Jilly Szwed warns that seasonal forecasts are more so generalizations.

“Usually, whenever we talk about seasonal forecasts, we look at large-scale factors, large-scale patterns, El Nino and La Nina are really the key ones when we talk about winter,” said Szwed.

There’s a furry factor that Chief Meteorologist Bill Meck says not to forget, the wooly worm.

“The final race on Sunday, the winner of that determines what the forecast for the winter will be, according to the wooly worm, and last year, the forecast wasn’t half bad!” Meck said.

The Beattyville Wooly Worm Festival this weekend will add another Winter Outlook to the mix. The Old Farmer’s Almanac calls for a mild and wet winter in our area.

The Farmer’s Almanac said “biting cold and snowy.”
