CATLETTSBURG, Ky. (LEX 18) – Kentucky State Police in Ashland are investigating an attempted murder in Catlettsburg.

According to a report, officers were called to a home on Barbeque Road.

At the time of the initial call, it was reported to KSP that a deputy with the Boyd County Sheriff’s Office was actively being engaged with gunfire, and was requesting assistance.

Multiple troopers, detectives, and supervisors responded to the location, but the suspect was taken into custody before Kentucky State Police arrival.

Preliminary investigation revealed the deputy was originally dispatched to a domestic disturbance between Casey Watkins, 26 of Catlettsburg, and his mother, Tammy Watkins, age 50 also of Catlettsburg. Upon arrival of the deputy, Casey reportedly shot his mother in the abdomen and then fired a round in the direction of police. The deputy returned fire, but the suspect was able to flee from the back of the residence.

Police say Watkins was observed exiting a wood line near a neighboring residence. As officers approached, it was alleged that he discharged his weapon in their direction, which resulted in multiple rounds being fired by police.

Watkins nor any of the other officers were struck by gunfire, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

Watkins had been charged with Attempted Murder, and other charges are pending following a review of the investigation by the Boyd County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.
