LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– Residents can make their voices heard and exercise their right to vote during a special election, the outcome of which will have a lasting impact on the Lexington Police Department Mounted Unit. Voting is now open to decide the names of two new police barn cats.

The choices are as follows:

  • Bit and Bridle
  • Starsky and Hutch
  • Woody and Buzz
  • Smokey and Bandit

Voting opened Friday on the Lexington Police Twitter page (@lexkypolice) and website. The poll will remain open for one week.

The two curious and energetic tabby cats are brothers. A farm owner in Madison County rescued their mother a few months ago, and he soon had a litter of kittens on his hands. After seeing their social disposition, the Mounted Unit decided to adopt the brothers, and they have been a welcome addition to the barn.

The cats’ duties include patrolling the horse barn for mice and other varmints. They will follow in the in the legacy of Hobbs, the department’s longtime barn cat who passed away in April at the age of 20.
