Veteran In ICU After Argument Escalates To Shooting In Laurel County

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — Officials in Laurel County said a veteran is in intensive care after an argument escalated into a shooting early Saturday morning.

The Laurel County Sheriff’s office said the shooting happened about 12:20 a.m. in the parking lot of AMVETS, off U.S. Highway 25.

The Laurel County Sheriff said in a release that 69-year-old Donnie Mabe was shot once with a pistol. Reportedly Mabe was taken from Baptist Healthcare Hospital in Corbin to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he’s now in the ICU recovering from serious injuries.

Officials said William Helton of Corbin called 911 and told the dispatcher he thought he had shot someone in the parking lot.

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies and Corbin police were investigating the case.

There is no word on an arrest or charges.
