UPDATE:  Kimberly Beckett tells LEX 18 that her late mother’s car was found Thursday morning.  The car was found behind the Briarwood Apartments on Centre Parkway.

She said that a prescription inside the car with her name on it led to the car’s return. Her pharmacy was called after the prescription had been found and they called her.

Police are processing the evidence and hope to find the people who stole the car.

LEXINGTON, KY (LEX 18) – ‘Tis the season for crimes of opportunity, and for four thieves in Lexington last Thursday, that opportunity was an unlocked SUV inside a family’s garage.

Now that family is pleading for the return of the car and all the emotionally valuable mementos in it.

For Kimberly Beckett and her father, it was hard to be thankful on Thanksgiving morning.

Before the sun came up in their neighborhood, the two were already in disbelief.

“We woke up the morning of Thanksgiving and my dad went to go wash the vehicle and realized it was gone, out of the garage,” Becket said.

Home security video shows four young men backing that white Honda CRV out of the garage and down the driveway.

Beckett says the thieves got in by taking the garage door opener from her father’s unlocked car on the street. Her SUV was also unlocked, with the key and her purse inside.

“Definitely take your keys, take your purse inside,” Beckett said. “Take all the security measures. go through all the what if scenarios because they can happen.”

Beckett’s not just here to teach everyone a lesson though. She’s here to plead for the return of her car.

She says it was her Mother Patti’s, who passed away in February.

“This Thanksgiving was already going to be difficult enough for me and my family, and it was just a shock to realize the only real piece of her that I have left, which is her car, is gone,” She said.

Beckett says the mementos inside that car are far more important than her purse or anything else.

“I had gotten her a guardian angel visor clip for mother’s day that had that in it,” She said. “It meant the world to me.”

The SUV is a 2015 white Honda CRV Touring Edition with Kentucky tags 222-YMB.

Cases like this are why Lexington Police are urging everyone to take the “9 p.m. routine.”

Officers say before you settle in for the night, you should always turn your porch lights on, take valuables out of cars, and lock everything.
