Coach Stoops Responds To UK Football Player Charged With Assault

LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Lexington Police arrested a University of Kentucky football player for domestic violence on Sunday morning.

21-year-old Zy’Aire Jerome Hughes was arrested and taken to the Fayette County Detention Center.

Lexington Police say they responded to a home on Woodland Avenue and they found a woman with minor injuries.

Police tell us Hughes and the woman were in a dating relationship.

He was charged with fourth-degree assault – domestic violence.

Hughes is a red shirt freshman on the University of Kentucky football team.

Coach Mark Stoops released a statement on Sunday afternoon:

“We’re aware of the situation. We’re in the process of gathering information.  Proper behavior is an expectation of our program and we will address this as the facts are determined,” said Stoops.
