SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– President George H.W. Bush has been the only president, former or sitting, to visit Georgetown College.
The 41st president visited the college in September 2008.
Jim Allison, who helped plan the visit, said he remembers the day very well.
“The president was such a gracious individual, very kind, and he demonstrated a remarkable sense of humor,” said Allison.
Allison said that at 84, the former president was still pretty spry. He was in town when the college’s fitness center was named in his honor. Bush supported a scholarship program for golf.
“And what you have done is transfer the values you see of the game of golf to future generations,” Bush had said.
Allison remembers President Bush greeting all ages of students. He said that the president looked at him and joked “don’t tell Barbara I ate too many of these,” in reference to the country ham biscuits they served that day.
