BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– Boyd County jailer Joe Burchett has resigned from his position.

Bill Hensley, who was elected as jailer last month, will be sworn in as interim jailer until he’s permanently sworn in Jan. 7.

Burchett’s resignation follows two deaths that happened at the jail within a week of each other, one last Thursday and one on Sunday.

Prior to that, the jail had been dealing with numerous issues, including escapes, overdoses, and a riot.

Burchett’s resignation is effective as of Monday.
