SOMERSET, Ky. (LEX 18) – The mayor of Somerset was back in court Friday morning. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident back in August.

Mayor Eddie Girdler didn’t speak to LEX 18 after leaving court. His lawyer tells us that he’s confident his client would prevail due to surveillance video released of the crash.

Girdler is accused of hitting a 15-year-old bicyclist crossing the road and leaving the scene.

“The burden’s on the government..and they’ve showed me nothing so far to make me think he’s anything but innocent,” attorney Greg Ousley told LEX 18.

The surveillance video shows the bicyclist crossing the road and appears to show Girdler pumping the brakes of his SUV at the crosswalk.  The claimed the car hit her and that the mayor drove off.

“I think looking at the tape…it speaks for themselves when people look at the tape, they’ll see that there was little to no contact whatsoever and that the alleged victim rode on,” said Ousley.

The alleged victim was in court. She and a family member declined to speak to LEX 18. The judge was set a court date of March 29.
