LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– For the second year in a row, University of Kentucky police officers are trying to turn tragedy into generosity this holiday season.

The department is holding its “Cram the Cruiser” toy drive Friday.

People are asked to drop off new, unwrapped toys at the station on Euclid Avenue.

At 4 p.m., they’ll deliver the toys to the UK Children’s Hospital.

It started last year in honor of Jonathan Ard, an Iraq War veteran who lost his battle to leukemia two years ago.

This year, they’ll add Marco Shemwell’s name to the fundraiser.

He’s the 4-year-old who was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver near Kroger Field in September.

“What we love to do is see the faces of these people and the success of this project, doing something positive to give back to our community. So much so that this year they’ve even talked me into putting a Santa suit on.”

In addition to your donations, the toy drive is supported by the $60 a month UK officers pay or fundraise to take part in No-Shave November and beyond
