WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – Wolfe County Search & Rescue had a magical encounter with a strange man who got trapped in a chimney-like crack in the Red River Gorge.

According to a post on their Facebook page, the team was deployed to search for the lost subject. They had only a description and knew that the man was driving a red vehicle with Canadian plates.

After a search of trailhead parking lots, a vehicle was discovered parked at the Chimney Top Trailhead that matched the description of the one belonging to the subject. A hasty team was sent down Chimney Top Trail and verbal contact was made with the subject, who had become stuck down in the crack at Chimney Top Rock. Although the subject was stranded, he was uninjured and was reportedly in jolly spirits.

The subject told rescuers that he was familiar with the route but failed to bring any navigational instruments on his brief hike.

He also stated that while he felt he was an expert in exploring chimneys, he also regretted ignoring posted signs and the barrier walls at Chimney Top Rock meant to dissuade hikers from meeting his same fate.

He was grateful to be rescued as he had “a tight schedule to keep”, and he also stated that WCSART was “on his ‘nice’ list”.
