BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– One Northern Kentucky restaurant hopes to lift the spirits of federal workers who have uncertain futures with a free meal.

Guy Cummins, the owner of ‘Smokin’ This and That BBQ’ in Florence, is feeding every federal employee that comes in for a meal.

Cummins says he thinks the restaurant has fed about 100 people so far.

As the partial government shutdown moves into its sixth day, some federal workers say they’re getting nervous.

NBC News reports that nationwide about 420,000 federal workers are working without pay, and another 380,000 are on unpaid leave.

Cummins says he just thinks it’s only right to lend a helping hand.

Federal workers who visited the restaurant say the meal did lift their spirits, and they are grateful.

“It’s very nice, and very generous. We’re very grateful.”

Cummins says he’ll keep serving federal workers for free until the shutdown is over.
