LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE 3) – A Louisville teenager shot on his way to school Monday morning has died.

It happened around 6:45 a.m. on South 43rd Street in the Shawnee neighborhood.

Police say the victim was 18 years old and was taken to UofL Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

JCPS would not confirm if the victim was a student, but sources tell WAVE 3 News that he was a student, and was on his way to the bus stop when he was shot.

Darwin Belliard lives on South 43rd Street and heard his mother scream when she heard the gunshots.

“My mom said there were six gun shots that woke her up,” said Belliard. “As soon as I heard my mom screaming that someone was shot, it was just like second nature to me to grab my first aid kit and try to assist him.”

Belliard told WAVE 3 News he recently got back home after serving four years in the U.S. Army and wanted to help the teen.

“I was Airborne Infantry and I have extensive training on combat life saving skills and I’m also EMT qualified,” Belliard said.

The teen’s backpack was left behind at the scene.

“He was walking to school, car pulled up someone got out, shot six times at him and if i’m not mistaken one bullet hit him and drove off,” Belliard said.

The rest of the bullets went flying, hitting Belliard’s home and his neighbors home. No one else was hurt.

No suspects have been arrested.
