WRIL is reporting the incident happened Monday at Nally and Hamilton mine off Hwy 2012 in the Balkan area.

The coroner identifies him as 56-year-old Jeffrey Norman Sloan, of Clinton, Tennessee, an engineer. The coroner says Slone was performing a spad job in the mine when he was involved in an accident with a shuttle car.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration is handling the investigation. A spokesperson told WRIL that there will be a delay in some information getting out due to the government shutdown.

“My deepest sympathies go out to the Sloan family,” Kentucky Energy and Environment Secretary Charles G. Snavely said. “We will learn more about how this accident happened and what can be done to prevent another such loss of life.”
