FRANKFORT, Ky. (LEX 18)– Kentucky is taking a new approach to attract the country’s top teachers.

The Department of Education announced Thursday a new student loan forgiveness program for aspiring teachers, or teachers who want to get their master’s degree.

The program is called the Kentucky Academy for Equity in Teaching.

Participants will receive financial support and training as they are encouraged and mentored by other experienced and effective teachers.

Education leaders say the goal is to attract top talent, a diverse workforce, and teachers with experience to ensure success for each Kentucky student.

“There is no factor at the school level that is more important than having a high quality and effective teacher in the classroom.”

The deadline to apply for the program is Feb. 13.
