LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — There will be 18 salt trucks and 18 drivers on call tonight in Laurel County, and they’re ready to work long hours as the snow falls.

Bobby Bailey from the road department told LEX 18 that they’re working with about 200 tons of salt to cover around 1,200 miles of roads.

As the temperatures could plummet immensely, they’re also mixing another chemical with all of the salt to make it work faster.

“Salt quits working around 20 degrees, and the calcium we are working on goes down to subzero. We are mixing it with the salt in order for it to work better in real cold conditions,” said Bailey.

All of their hard work is to try and keep commuters safe.
