LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — Preparing your car for subzero-degree conditions is very important, and there are plenty of ways to make sure your vehicle is ready to brave the cold.

One of the worst issues drivers have to deal with during the cold weather is walking outside to a frozen car. There are probably several items you have inside your home or that you can get a local store to help with these issues.

If you don’t have a garage to keep your car in, then the single digit temperatures can take a toll on your vehicle.

AAA in Lexington said that de-icer is an easy product that you can pick up from the store. Spraying de-icer on a car door will help stimulate the thawing process.

Your battery is going to be another issue. AAA recommends that you make sure it is clean and free of debris.

“Check the fluids, make sure everything is topped off. Making sure their is enough gas, so you don’t have to worry about the gas lines freezing. Another aspect would be to make sure you have enough air in your tires,” said AAA Fleet Manager Jed Bowles.

If you’re having trouble getting your car door open, you can dip the tip of your key into rubbing alcohol and once you stick it in the keyhole, it should loosen up.
