CLARK COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– Excitement is building for Super Bowl Sunday, especially for Patriots fans in Winchester who are ready to cheer on one of their own.

Patriots running back Rex Burkhead was born in the Bluegrass and still has family in Clark County.

The touchdown that sent the New England Patriots to Super Bowl 53 was a moment of enthusiasm for many fans in Winchester. That’s because the player who scored that game-winning touchdown was Burkhead.

“Oh, I was very excited. I’m pretty sure my neighbors heard me yelling,” said All-Star Sports owner and Patriots fan Teresa Fraley.

He was born in the Bluegrass and moved to Texas a few years later, but many in town know his proud grandparents who still live in Clark County.

Debbie Hatton showed LEX 18’s Alexa Helwig old pictures of her looking after a young Rex and his brother, Ryan.

“I just loved them,” said Hatton. “They were the best kids.”

Hatton keeps in contact with Burkhead’s grandparents and says his success keeps her watching football.

“Oh yes. I watch him every chance I get. I’ll tell John, ‘you tell me now when Rex is getting ready to play,’ and I’m going to come in and watch him,” she said.
