GARRARD COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– Police say tragedy was averted Tuesday morning in Garrard County thanks to quick actions from officers.

It happened around 5 a.m. at the Nicholasville Road, Sugarcreek intersection in Garrard County.

Officers were notified of an erratic driver and reported to the area to investigate. When Officers Josh Cheek and Alan Weston arrived, they found a Nissan passenger car on fire with an unconscious driver trapped inside.

Officer Weston was able to shatter the window, and Cheek and Weston extracted the victim out of the vehicle.

They say the cause of the crash was a pre-existing medical condition of the driver.

“He was given glucose at the scene and transported to a local McDonald’s, where he made arrangements to be picked up,” said Chief Rodney Kidd.

Both Cheek and Weston are resting up after Tuesday’s events.

“They jeopardize their lives, every day, for these citizens. this is just another prime example of the sacrifices they make,” said Kidd.
