LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The return of chilly weather is timed nicely for a chance to take the Polar Plunge for a great cause.

Lexington’s annual Polar Plunge will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Texas Roadhouse on Richmond Road. Participants will leap into a frigid pool, with funds raised benefiting Special Olympics.

People can take part in the event, sponsored in part by LEX 18, by visiting the website, donating and signing up. Or you can simply donate.

UK football coach Mark Stoops is encouraging people to help out as well, offering to match donations to his page.

The organization helps raise money for about 9,000 Special Olympics athletes in Kentucky every year.

Last year, former LEX 18 Sunrise weekend anchor Steve Butera took part, and this year participants will be cheered on by some of LEX 18’s own.
