LONDON, Ky. (LEX 18) — The Whitman Branch Shooting Range is closed indefinitely after officials discovered the area full of trash and damaged by “careless users,” the U.S. Forest Service said Tuesday.

According to a Facebook post, vandals shot holes in a new roof and blasted new signs. They also were using illegal targets, including propane tanks and fire extinguishers.

The site also was strewn with shell casings and trash, officials said. The vandalism appears to be a recurring problem at the site.

Officials ask users to review the rules and regulations before using the site when it reopens.

When the site might reopen was unclear, with officials saying available staff were busy addressing bigger issues brought on by flooding.
