LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– A former UK freshman accused of fatally hitting a 4-year-old with his vehicle has pleaded not guilty to charges against him.

On Friday morning, Jacob Heil appeared in court to be arraigned on one charge of reckless homicide and one charge of DUI, under 21.

His attorney entered a not guilty plea to both charges and waived a formal arraignment.

Heil is accused of driving the car that struck Marco Shemwell near Kroger Field back in September.

Shemwell later died from his injuries.

Heil is due back in court March 7 for a pre-trial hearing and March 22 for a status hearing.
