LESLIE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) – A Leslie County man died a hero trying to save his friend who was trapped in his car in a flooded creek.

Sadly,  both men were killed and other family members were injured in the chaos.

The Leslie County Sheriff says that the incident happened Saturday afternoon on Stidham Road. Officials tell LEX 18 that Kenny Hensley’s car went off the roadway and ended up in Wolfe Creek. The car turned on its side and became trapped against a bridge.

David Stidham and several family members who live nearby ran outside to help. Stidham also became trapped in the floodwaters and other family members were also swept downstream.

“Family members that were there… they were upset. They were trying to figure out what was going on trying to do what needed to be done to save them. And they were really hurt,” Viola Lewis, a Wooton firefighter and family friend told LEX 18’s Kylen Mills.

Both men were said to be loved in the community. Autopsies will be performed to see if the two men drowned or if something else contributed to their deaths.
