(LEX 18)– Passengers flying from Chicago to Lexington had quite a scare Wednesday afternoon.

The plane was close to landing at Blue Grass Airport. Passengers aboard Express Jet Airline Flight 4182 said that everything was fine until there was a big boom and then a jolt.  At first, the crew didn’t know what hit them.

Soon after, the airline announced a bird had collided with the front of the plane as it was descending.

Syd Ulis, a Kentucky Utilities engineer, was travelling for work said that everyone was confused.

“At first everybody was a little nervous, but then they said it was a bird. Everyone was kind of confused, it must have been a pretty big bird,” said Ulis. “The flight attendant actually got up and started looking around. Her face kind of was alarming. She didn’t know what it was She got on the phone with the pilot in the cockpit then sat back down, she was like, we seem to have hit a bird.”

LEX 18’s Leigh Searcy asked Ulis what he felt during the incident.

“Like a jerk, like turbulence, then you hear this loud boom. You’re kind of like hopefully the engine is not..something is not wrong with the engine,” he said.

Despite the damage, Ulis said the plane made a perfect landing and he commends the flight crew for handling the scare as well as they did.
