KNOX COUNTY, Ky.  (LEX 18) – A Michigan man appeared in court today, charged with the shooting death of a man at a Knox County convenience store.

The victim’s family says they’re confident the right man has been charged, but the suspect claims he’s innocent.

Phillip Lee Lewis made his first court appearance in Knox County, where he is facing charges of murder and robbery. Police say Lewis walked into the A&B Quick Stop in Gray and pointed a gun at the clerk. Authorities say Lewis fatally shot 25-year-old Gary Medlin, a customer inside the convenience store, when he tried to flee.

“He has took something that has destroyed us. My grandbabies, both of them, have to grow up without a daddy,” said Brandy Frechette, Medlin’s mother.

In a jailhouse interview, Lewis denied ever being in Kentucky.

“I know I ain’t do it. I ain’t never been down to this end of Kentucky. Never been to Kentucky at all,” Lewis told LEX 18’s Alexa Helwig.

Medlin’s mother says she won’t stop fighting to keep her son’s memory alive, especially in the minds of his two young sons.
