LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)-  It’s become an even bigger problem than it has been in the past and some have paid for it with their lives.

A new initiative has been launched by an organization to bring awareness to the dangers of running red lights.

As LEX 18 went out to cover this topic at a Lexington intersection, cars darted under red lights as our camera rolls.  In 2018, there was a 28 percent increase in the number of citations issued by Lexington police for red light running.

Martha Casher works with ‘I Care KY’ which is hopeful the message can reach many of our youngest drivers.

“‘Don’t Squeeze The Lemon’ is a contest that ‘I Care KY’ has put together for high school students,” says Casher.

The name is a play on speeding through yellow lights. Had someone heeded that advice back in June of 2014, Martha’s friend Margaret Elery might not have died at the intersection of Georgetown Road and Briarwood. Her loss inspired this mission.
