NORTON COUNTY, Kansas (LEX 18) – A Kentucky native was found dead in her Kansas home on Sunday afternoon and her sister talked to the main suspect on the phone that same day.

38-year-old Lori Shield is originally from Maysville. Her husband, 42-year-old Damien Shields, has been named a suspect in connection with her death.

Shield’s sister shared an eerie phone call with the alleged killer on the same day as Lori’s murder.

Mary Humphrey says she answered a call on Sunday from, who she thought, was Lori. Instead, her sister’s husband Damien was on the other line.

“Well Damien, where’s Lori? Where’s she at? He just answered in the calmest voice. Oh, she’s dead. I killed her,” Humphrey told LEX 18.

Humphrey was home in Flemingsburg and hundreds of miles away from her sister in Kansas. She called the police.

“It was taking hours for them to contact me back. And I knew then, something wasn’t right,” said Humphrey.

The Norton County Sheriff’s office was called to Lori’s home around 4 p.m. on Sunday and found her dead. On Monday, Damien was hospitalized in Missouri for injuries that law enforcement says appear to be self-inflicted. He was then taken into custody and named a suspect in Lori’s death.

Humphrey says the couple’s relationship was tumultuous. She says that Damien had previously gone to prison for five years for domestic violence against her sister.

“I’ve always told her, it ends one of two ways; either you leave, or he kills you,” said Humphrey

Now she is fighting for custody of Lori’s three kids with her in Kentucky.
