JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– Investigators say discarded ashes that were still hot, are to blame for an early morning fire.

It happened around 3 a.m. Thursday on Birch Drive in Nicholasville.

Officials say it originally started as a trash can fire, but spread into a nearby duplex and up into the attic.

We’re told one unit has significant damage and the other was unaffected.

Officials say neither unit had working smoke detectors.

The two people inside the damaged unit were displaced by the incident.

No one was hurt.
