LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18)– A Lexington resident has created an online petition in an effort to save some local summer swimming programs and services.

Earlier this month, Mayor Linda Gorton unveiled her budget proposal, which includes a 15 percent cut in some spending categories. It also includes cuts in certain Parks & Recreation services, like shortened public pool hours, starting some summer swim programs later, and closing Picadome pool.

Some parents say the changes are concerning, but Gorton says they’re necessary to get the city on track financially.

“There are a few things in parks,” Gorton said. “We have not cut programs, but we have built in starting some of our programs a week later, and ending them a week sooner. It’s a very small blip but it saves money.”
