MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18)– This weekend marks the fourth annual Officer Daniel Ellis Memorial 5K in Madison County, honoring the life and legacy of Richmond’s fallen hero.

On Saturday, an estimated 1,000 runners will participate in the 5k. The event helps raise money and keeps the memory of Officer Ellis alive in the community he once called home. His widow, Katie, said that the race is a perfect way to do both things.

“It was just a combination of we wanted to get started. He came to us with the idea of a 5K, just a community event and it’s just, really turned into this awesome thing,” said Katie.

She said that for years, she and her son have received much support from the community.

“It’s truly amazing, Richmond and the larger community here, around central Kentucky, has been a family. Daniel and I couldn’t have picked a better place to raise our family and live. I’m glad to stay and be a part of this community,” Katie said.

The proceeds from the race will go to help those in need throughout Madison County.
