EAST BERNSTADT, Ky. (LEX 18) – Police arrested an East Bernstadt woman after they say she failed to pick up her two children from school.

According to an arrest citation, two children were left at Hazel Green Elementary after no one picked them up from the bus. The principal of the school called officers and gave them the children’s home address.

When police arrived at the home on HWY 1376, a man, Freddy Scalf, opened the door and told officers that the children’s mother had gone to look for a ride to pick the kids up.

Scalf was arrested on another warrant.

At 8 p.m. no one had arrived to pick up the children. An officer contacted social services and they advised him that the children’s mother also had a 4-year-old. When the officer went back to the house, he discovered Amanda Reynolds and her 4-year-old living in deplorable conditions.

Reynolds admitted to the officer that she had been hiding when he came to the door the first time because she had a warrant for her arrest.

The officer noted that she had not made an attempt to go get her other two children from school and that it had been over four hours.

The arrest citation states that Reynolds “actively abandoned her two minor children and endangered the welfare of all the children because of the drug use and deplorable living conditions.”

Reynolds has been charged with abandonment of a minor and endangering the welfare of a minor.
