CARTER COUNTY, Ky. (LEX 18) — A massive apartment fire Saturday morning forced several families to evacuate the structure, but apparently no one was injured.

Firefighters remained on the scene working to strike the blaze even as officials said everyone inside was able to escape.

Earlier, fire crews had to evacuate the structure over fears of a roof collapse but no one was injured.

The fire was traumatic for the residents.

One woman tells LEX 18 she was jolted awake by the smell of smoke and saw flames outside her window. She said she was able to grab only one belonging — a quilt she was given after her son died last summer.

Everything else, she said, was lost in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
